“Success has many parents while failure is an orphan.”

This phrase was popularised by US President John F Kennedy in the 1960s, but was coined by Italian diplomat Count Caleazzo Ciano in 1942. In essence, it means that success is very rarely a solo affair. While mistakes and errors may be owned by individuals, being successful requires a team of supporters who align to one vision and play key roles to make the success possible. Never is this more evident than in school communities where student success is influenced by everyone in the team. Our Rochedale students depend on a great many key people for their success including class teachers, support teachers, specialist teachers, teacher aides, school administration staff, parent volunteers, families and not least of all our P&C Association. To everyone in our school community, I want to thank you for being one of the many ‘parents’ of our students’ success.

P and C

Last Tuesday, our P&C held their AGM and elected their Executive for 2021. These key support people and office bearers are:

Greg Heath – President (re-elected)

Carmichael Reynolds – Vice President

Vacant Position – Secretary

Maggie Liu – Treasurer (re-elected)

General Officers – Petta Traynor (re-elected), Allan Burchill (re-elected), Rob Timms.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Executive Team for their support of the school and for volunteering to take on these important roles. The school is lucky to have such a dedicated team of volunteers who give their free time for the betterment of Rochedale State School and I look forward to working with the P&C team throughout 2021. Please give them your full support throughout the year.

School Leaders

Our 2021 School Leaders will be formally inducted into their roles and presented with their badges on a special assembly this Friday 5 March. Parents of these school leaders have been sent an invitation inviting them to attend this assembly and a post-assembly gathering with the school leaders and school administration. We look forward to sharing this special event together. Last Wednesday, our student leaders participated in their first official function for the year attending the Halogen Leadership day in Brisbane with Ms Maxton and Chappy Sue. Talking to our leaders upon their return it was apparent that they received some important key messages about what student leadership is and the positive impact they can have within our school community.

Maintenance

Junior Playground – Work on Phase 1 and Phase 2 is progressing nicely and I am extremely happy to announce that our P&C kindly agreed to finance the final stage of this work to the amount of $62 000. Phase 3 involves removing the old shade structure and replacing it with a fixed, insulated cover which will be integrated into the overall design. With this work now financed, we can look to complete this project in one episode and have the area fully completed and ready to open for the beginning of Term 2. Thank you for your patience while this work is being undertaken and thank you to our P&C for providing these very important funds.

New ROSHCA Building – Over the weekend the new ROSHCA building was craned into place (in 5 pieces) and is now in position. Work will continue on the fit out, walkways and associated bits and pieces to ensure the building is ready to go and alleviate the waiting lists for ROSHCA. The building should be commissioned within the next few weeks.

Student Teachers

Our 13 first year Bachelor of Education Griffith University students finish their prac this Friday. They have had a very rewarding and fulfilling first week and I am sure their learning will continue this week as they visit different classes. We have a very strong partnership with Griffith Uni and next term we will again welcome student teachers to our school to support their progression from student to teacher. These pracs are a vital component of the Teaching Degree and we are very proud to play our part in developing the next generation of teachers.

Learner Profile: Attribute focus for the week – Open Minded – Students should demonstrate caring towards others and be accepting, considerate and helpful of others within our school community. Students may also help resolve conflict by seeing all sides or reconcile with someone they may have had an issue with. Students should share their actions with their teacher.

Kind regards
Keith Graham
Principal

The Power of Words

As part of their current unit of inquiry, our year two students have been learning about and practising their social skills. The unit is underpinned by the central idea: We are responsible for building healthy relationships.  Throughout the unit, the children have been learning how to communicate more effectively with each other and their role and responsibility in social interactions.

Last Thursday February 25, the students enjoyed a presentation from children’s entertainer Renata Jayne.  Through drama, song, dance, dress up and puppetry Renata spoke about the importance of ‘using your words’ to communicate your message effectively.  She began with teaching the students the importance and impact of simply giving someone a smile.  She then discussed common childhood/playground disputes and used role play and puppetry to demonstrate how to respond appropriately in these situations, i.e. can we please take turns, may I share with you please, please stop it I don’t like it when you do that and I’m sorry.  Renata spoke about the importance of using manners, i.e. saying please and thank you and she also taught the children how to say please, thank you and sorry in sign language.

Renata ended the show with a fun rap song that the children were all able to sing and dance along to.  This song aligned with our school’s ‘High 5’ strategy reinforcing the skills that the children have learnt since Prep at Rochedale.

This week the year two’s will all participate in their ‘friendship fun festival’, a culminating activity where the children are able to use the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the past 5 weeks and apply a range of social skills in a fun afternoon of team activities and game play.

Enjoy the week ahead

Curriculum Connection

Published by Rochedale State School

Dear Parents / Caregivers,

One of the key elements of the PYP are the Approaches to Learning Skills. These are a set of skills that students build upon and develop during their primary school years. These skills match and compliment those within the Australian Curriculum. They are considered to be life – long skills that students can take well into adulthood.

The IB-PYP Approaches to Learning are transdisciplinary and grouped under five headings: Communication skills, Research skills, Thinking skills, Social skills, and Self-Management skills. Each skill is designed to ensure that students develop these during their time in school. They lay a foundation for future learning and help prepare them for a quickly changing world.

Through the range of learning experiences that the teachers prepare for the students, they carefully plan for them to have the opportunities to experience, develop and extend these skills. The learning experiences may be within a single curriculum area or transdisciplinary across a combination of areas. Through their learning, each student has the chance to demonstrate their level of mastery of specific skills from within each set. In combination with content knowledge and conceptual understanding, teachers assess these skills, and plan for future learning as appropriate.

The complexity and depth of each skill matches each student’s ability and are age appropriate. Teachers support and scaffold the learning of these skills throughout the learning tasks.

Hi RSS community,

I hope you are well and that your weekend was wonderful.

Working in a school environment I am continually reminded of the importance of healthy friendships. Students from Prep to Year 6 care very much about being a good friend and having good friends, it is a basic need of humanity. Last Monday I visited our year 6 2020 students that have commenced year 7 at Mansfield State High School, it was wonderful to see how smoothly they made the transition from primary school. Most of the students do not have classes together and they are making new friends which is fantastic but they also have the maturity to strengthen their ‘old’ friendships at lunches and weekends. I’m looking forward to visiting RSHS next week.

As parents we continually teach our children to be honest, to be generous, to be kind, to make good choices, to have empathy and have fun with friends and although we are instilling values in our sons and daughters there are still  times when they may say, – “I don't have friends, or my friend didn't want to play with me today, or they are not my friend anymore”.

Be assured this is pretty normal and your child won't be the only one trying to navigate the art of building a healthy, solid friendship. Reassure them what friendship looks like and role model it with your own friends and encourage them to pursue kind, caring and fun friendships.

I have just spent the weekend with friends - one my neighbour from childhood, one a friend from Wollongong where we lived for 8 years and one a friend from Rockhampton where we had our first child 23 years ago. Friendships remain over time and distance if you want them to, as long as you continue to nurture them with some of the basics of school friendship knowledge - be kind, be there and have fun.

A quote from a friend Ally Kingdom, – “We were not designed to do life on our own so take the steps needed to stay socially, emotionally and spiritually connected. You are worth it!

Enjoy your week!

ICAS Competitions

Published by Rochedale State School

Rochedale State School is offering students in Years 2 – 6 the opportunity to participate in the University of New South Wales Online International Competitions in the following areas:

  • English  –  Week 6 Term 3
  • Science –  Week 7 Term 3
  • Mathematics – Week 8 Term 3

Due to the high demand of participants in these competitions, students will attend the computer lab at lunch time to carry out the ICAS assessment.

ICAS assessments have taken place annually in schools for over thirty years and in twenty countries. Educational Assessment Australia (EAA), who design and deliver the assessments, is the not-for-profit arm of the University of New South Wales.

All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly and their score compared with the rest of the students tested. The tests are an excellent preparation for national tests and the student report is useful for highlighting your child’s strengths and weaknesses. The UNSW certificate and individual student report are also suitable for your child to include in a portfolio. If you would like more information on ICAS please visit their website at https://www.icasassessments.com/

Please note we will not be using the ICAS PARENT PAYMENT SYSTEM. Payment must be made to the office using BPoint or Credit Card.

Your child should have already brought home a permission form, however, please contact the office if you require another permission slip. Forms and payment are due 25 March, 2021

Library News

Welcome to Week 6 of 2021!

Protecting our Library Books

We have had an increase in borrowed library books being returned damaged of late, and so if we can urge students and families to be extra diligent in taking care of our library books at home and when in students' bags, that would be appreciated.

Lots of books are being returned wet, or chewed by dogs or having their plastic, protective covers ripped or torn off.

If a book is returned in such a way that it cannot be returned to our shelves, please be aware that an invoice will be sent out to fund the replacement of the damaged book.

We pride ourselves on our collection of books we have available to our students, and want to ensure that these books can be utilised by as many students as possible. So please take care of our books when in your care. Thanks again for your ongoing support.
