Perspective

Is the term we use to describe the way we see something; it is our lens for viewing situations and events. We all bring a different perspective to everything we see which is why some people can see two faces in the picture below while others see a table. Both perspectives are right, yet it is the exact same picture.

It is because we do have different perspectives that I always caution how important it is to consider an alternate point of view in relation to issues that may happen at school. People will often tell you a story from their perspective. They frequently believe they are seeing the whole picture even when there may be a completely different picture if viewed from a different perspective. Therefore, it is so important if you have a concern, to please bring it to us and allow the school to find out more information and perhaps provide you with a different perspective. If you hear that there is an issue through parent chat on social media, at the front gate or an informal gathering, keep in mind that it is ‘hearsay’ and may not be the ‘big’ issue that it seems to be, nor actually be accurate in what occurred and only be one perspective. Face your concerns, don’t facebook your concerns. The best way to find out is to go directly to the source and have a chat with the school, we are more than happy to help and listen to your perspective and in return, we ask that you listen to ours. Together we may find a new perspective, which may give more clarity to all involved.

Fire visit

Speaking of perspective, last week the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service visited our Year 1s bringing their brand new fire truck. The firefighters shared their work perspective explaining what they do and how they often have to help people in times of great need. In addition to the talk, they also showed us their equipment. Part of the display was placing teachers - obviously great risk takers - in the ladder/basket and lifting them 30m above our school. Mr Eames took his camera up with him and took some photos of our school from a perspective we very rarely see. It was a wonderful visit and we thank the Wishart fire crew for their time.

 International Women’s Day

Around the world, March 8 is International Women’s Day, the day we recognise the achievement of women and the important roles they play in society. As a school, we strive to ensure that a message of equality is developed within our community, and amongst our students, to continue to break down the gender stereotypes or barriers, which exist both overtly and covertly. To all women, I say thank you for the valuable contributions you have made and continue to make in all facets of society. Equal respect and treatment is a basic right of all people and should not be something afforded to only some in our society. International Women’s Day serves as a reminder that while we have made great inroads, we still have a distance to travel in ensuring equal treatment for all. To all the wonderful women in our community, may I wish you all a happy International Women’s Day.

Parent interviews. How is your child going?

In line with our reporting policy, parent/teacher interviews will be held over the last two weeks of this term. The interviews will last 20 minutes and will be held before and after school at times suitable to each individual teacher. Interviews will open Wednesday and can be booked on line, please look for this specific information in the DP’s section of the newsletter or on our webpage. Interview times will be filled on a first come first served basis by each teacher. I hope as many parents as possible can take advantage of this reporting opportunity. Please note that written reports will go home at the end of next term.

We have wonderful student leaders

Congratulations to our 2021 school leaders who were acknowledged and presented with their badges on last Friday’s parade. Our school is very lucky to have a number of dedicated students who volunteer to lead and help our school and fellow students in a variety of extra ways. I hope our leaders commit to their role with enthusiasm and dedication throughout the year and I very much look forward to working with them.

Building updates

Due to its location, everyone is able to see the work on the new ROSHCA building and keep track of progress. This isn’t the case for the junior playground, located in the far back corner of our school. I have fielded many questions regarding the progress of this work and what it will look like, so in response to your inquiries I thought I would share some progress photos. The photos show the tiered wall almost complete and the adjacent bank cleared where slides will be installed. This work is on track and the entire area should be ready for the start of next term. Watch this space.

Learner Profile: Attribute focus for the week – Inquirer - This week students should construct a question of inquiry which interests them and find the answer to it. It may be done as part of the whole class Unit of Inquiry and related to the class program or may be something of independent interest to the student. Students should discuss and they share their actions with their teacher.

Kind regards
Keith Graham

How can I help my child with their writing?

Whether your child is in Prep or in Year 6, the following points can be promoted at home to encourage healthy habits when writing.

  • Correct posture and pencil grip is important. Feet flat on the floor with book or paper slightly tilted.
  • Encourage your child to reread what they have written, out loud – reading their sentences/paragraphs/text out loud can help to check it makes sense.
  • Ask your child to go back and proofread and edit - make at least two changes to your text in a different colour to make it sound better.
  • Promote the use of punctuation. Most importantly, have they used capital letters and full stops?

There are many other fundamental skills associated to the teaching of writing. However, encouraging our students to work through each of these important steps will help them become better writers.

Eventually, with consistent rehearsing, these skills will become embedded in their everyday processes – over time becoming automatic and a part of their writing routine.

UNSW ICAS Competitions

Please be aware forms have been sent home for those families interested in the UNSW ICAS Competitions – English, Maths and Science.

Forms are to be returned by the 15 March. Those families who’ve returned forms will be sent an invoice with payment due by 25 March.

ICAS assessments have taken place annually in schools for over thirty years and in twenty countries. Educational Assessment Australia (EAA), who design and deliver the assessments, is the not-for-profit arm of the University of New South Wales.

All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly and their score compared with the rest of the students tested. The tests are an excellent preparation for national tests and the student report is useful for highlighting your child’s strengths and weaknesses. The UNSW certificate and individual student report are also suitable for your child to include in a portfolio.

If you would like more information on ICAS please visit their website at https://www.icasassessments.com/

Curriculum Connection

Published by Rochedale State School

Dear Parents/caregivers,

What makes a good inquirer?

A good inquirer is someone who lets curiosity and interest drive their learning.  They may begin with an experience or question that further sparks their interest and fuels a burning desire to find out more. This spark ignites a flurry of questions and wonderings. A good inquirer may begin by asking simple small literal questions. Once they have built up a bank of knowledge they venture into asking more interpretative questions. These questions lead to a set of conceptual questions which drive their inquiries further and deeper.

Through their observations, discussions, reading and experiments they collect information, opinions and ideas that challenge and stretch their already held knowledge and conceptual understanding. A good inquirer will use a clear, simple and precise organising tool to record the information gathered. This method helps them to easily organise and retrieve the information gathered.

Being able to analyse, identify conceptual connections and develop ideas based upon their information gathered is the next key skill in becoming a good inquirer. During this process the inquirer makes higher ordered thinking links within the concepts and ideas within the information gathered. They look for similarities and differences in the information to help them answer their questions and to deepen their thinking. A good inquirer writes a short statement of enduring understanding which draws together and summarises their learning.

A good inquirer then confidently and creatively presents a summary of their conceptual understanding to an eager audience.

They then reflect upon the process they have undertaken and think about ways to improve their learning.
