Many cultures, one community.

This is how I proudly describe our school. Rochedale State School has many different and diverse cultures that combine to make up our unique community. In a world where difference is often used to divide and marginalise people, it is so important that we, as a school, actively teach and model respect, tolerance and acceptance. As an IB World School, we want to make our students, who will be the leaders of tomorrow, accepting of difference and embracing of others in a harmonious world community. While this attitude should be present every day, it is even more relevant this week as 15 – 21 March is Harmony Week where we celebrate the cultural diversity of our students and staff. Falling during Harmony Week is our National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence on Friday. These two themes are intertwined as often bullying is based on difference or the unacceptance of others. By teaching our students about anti-bullying and harmony we hope to help them understand that while we may have different cultures, religions, skin colours, beliefs and languages; we are all part of the one global community. Children’s attitudes (and consequently the attitudes of tomorrow’s adults) are influenced strongly by home. As adults, we all carry the responsibility to make the world a better place and respect difference and encourage tolerance. Linking Harmony week and the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is the colour orange and to support these two important themes we are inviting students to wear orange to school on Friday (Year 5 and 6 students going to interschool sport will need to ensure they have their proper sports uniform to change into for their games). So this Friday, let us colour our school orange and while doing so, make the world a better place for everyone.

Educational Queensland International

EQI is a branch of our Department of Education with a focus on working with international students and jurisdictions for the benefit of all involved. EQI arrange many of our study tours and provide opportunities for international teachers to visit Australian schools. Over the past 12 months EQI have been working on a project to highlight the international mindedness of QLD schools and recognise some of the great practices that occur. Rochedale State School was one of 12 schools chosen across QLD as an exemplar for other schools. Last week, students and key staff were filmed sharing our practices and inclusive culture, which embrace our community diversity. Later on this year, we will work with other schools to help them develop their own school practices. This recognition is testament to the work we do here at Rochedale ensuring every child and family feel welcome within our school and the value we see in diversity. Rochedale State school; Many cultures, one community.

School photos

Next week, all classes will be having their school photos taken on either Tuesday or Wednesday – please see your class teacher for the exact day and time. Being a formal occasion, it is expected that all children will be correctly dressed in their formal school uniform. Shoes should be black and hair should be neat and tidy and tied back with blue ribbons if necessary. (Children can change in and out of their formal uniform for the photo if their preference is to wear another style of uniform each day). As always we thank you for your support with our school uniform and for helping us maintain our positive school look and image. The payment envelopes have been sent home; please ensure that your child brings the payment envelope with them on the day to hand directly to the photo staff – not the school. If you have paid for the photos online with your code (our preferred method), you are not required to bring the envelope on photo day.

Please note; our staff photo will be on Tuesday morning at 8:00am meaning staff may be unavailable for meetings or chats at this time.

Building Works

The new ROSHCA building is in the final stages of completion and should be handed over to the school this week. Once handed over, the P&C will then begin work on the internal fit-out before commissioning this building into use.

Parking – we made the news.

Rochedale made the television news last week in a general story about traffic congestion around schools and the illegal practices of drivers around pick–up and drop-off times. A school of our size, in a growing suburb, is always going to generate traffic, however the impact of this to all in our community can be minimised if we consider others and follow the rules. Please do not wait double parked in our carpark. While it may seem convenient for you, it is extremely dangerous for children to run out to and from cars parked like this while other cars are backing out or driving around you into oncoming traffic. In the rain last week many parents decided to avoid the dedicated drop off area and instead chose to drop off children near the crossing area of the front car park or use the turning circle in front of Admin – both of these habits endanger students’ safety. Our children’s lives are precious and are surely worth you waiting five minutes in the pick-up line to ensure a safe collection or drop-off. Additionally, if you are parking outside the gates, please be mindful of our neighbours and local businesses. Please do not park on private property and do not block trade by using business parking for school parking. We at Rochedale SS try to be caring neighbours and we rely on everyone attached to our school to do the right thing to look after all in our community. Thank you.

Learner Profile: Attribute focus for the week – Balanced – Students should read a variety of authors and books to become balanced readers and share their week’s reading list with their teacher. Depending on age and reading ability of students this may be done as a whole class, small groups or individually. Check with your class teacher how it will be done in your particular room.

Kind regards

Spelling Information

In many year levels, including years five and six, teachers are delivering a differentiated spelling program across the cohort.  This means that students participate in (a) weekly spelling lesson/s in a group that targets their exact spelling needs with a teacher, which may not be their own.  At Rochedale we track and monitor students spelling achievement regularly using three tools.  Firstly, we administer a norm referenced spelling test twice a year to determine spelling age and ensure expected annual growth.  We also use a school developed spelling screener to determine the student specific spelling areas on which to focus.  Finally, we also use students writing samples to provide evidence of spelling application.  This rigorous assessment ensures that we are able to provide targeted instruction in spelling at the right developmental level for each student.  As part of the year five and six teaching team, I am taking both spelling groups in both year levels.  Teaching these groups and watching individual progress in spelling is often the highlight of my week.

Reading Goals

In my previous deputy newsletter spots, I have written to parents about the importance of approaching learning with a ‘growth mind-set’ and setting goals for learning.  Neuroscience research presents compelling arguments that these two areas are fundamental to student success.    We are discovering that the brain has more plasticity over time than we ever imagined; that essential aspects of intelligence can be enhanced through learning and perhaps of most importance, that persistence in the face of obstacles is a key ingredient in outstanding achievement.  Given these things, it is so wonderful to see goal setting so prominent in our classrooms with all students now having personal reading and writing goals they are working on.

Our teachers and students have worked extra hard negotiating a very specific reading goal on which they will focus.  These goals are intended to move students beyond a letter or PM number target to developing a reading behaviour that will assist them to improve in this area.  Classes will have different ways of recording and communicating these reading goals and I have seen many wonderful examples around the school including bookmarks, personal goal books and classroom displays.

Parents have a vital role in helping students achieve their set goals.  They can do this, by both giving their child opportunities to practise their reading every night and also by providing positive feedback when the reading behaviour is demonstrated at home.  Some parent ‘chats’ more generally about the importance of goal setting and having a ‘growth mindset’ are also very beneficial.

Have a great week

Year Five - Ananya, Luke, Max, Nate, Anamaria and Ava.

Year Six – Chris, Ellie, Matilda, Kusha, Kaileb and Rudra

The Student Council works very hard in providing opportunities for students to participate in school wide actions such as; wear your team colours, Harmony Day. They also organise and host teachers v students sport events and the term four Talent Quest. The Student Council also supports awareness campaigns for example: Hi 5 and Bystander5, and endangered species. They also fund raise for our commitments towards our World Vision sponsor child in Africa.

While these events are all small events in themselves, combined they form a key element in building our Rochedale School community.

I encourage you to encourage the children to support these actions. The Student Council are hosting a touch of orange day this Friday 19 March.

Have a great week

Harmony Day

Harmony Day 2021

This year on Friday March 19, we will be celebrating Harmony Day. We will do this by wearing a touch of orange. Some ideas are hair ribbons, socks, shorts, shirts, hats and appropriate and suitable footwear.

We ask you not to wear: orange make up, nail polish, jewellery, hair spray, face paint. No inappropriate messages on T-shirts.  All clothing must be sun smart.

To participate, we ask you to donate a gold coin donation

Harmony Day is held at the end of Harmony Week, and coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination since 1999. Harmony Day is about celebrating and accepting differences.

Orange is the colour selected to signify Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange represents social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and reassurance of mutual respect.

Those year 5 and 6 children involved in interschool sports day, will need to bring their Rochedale School uniform to change into before going to sport.

All donations will go towards our World Vision sponsor child commitments.

Thank you
From the Student Council

Chaplain's Corner

Hi Rochedale State School community,

I hope you have had a great weekend. Sunday nights [currently] in our home consist of an 'easy meal', preparation for the week ahead and the Amazing Race. If you have never watched this TV show before, contestants race around the world [Australia during covid] and have to complete challenging tasks along the way as they strive toward the prize money at the end of the race.

There are times in the race where contestants lean heavily on their race partner or even another team to help them complete a task. I have noticed the more a team complains the less likely they are to work well together and form alliances with other teams. The teams that work well together, stay focussed, are resilient, resourceful and determined. These teams almost always finish the leg of the race, even if they are the last team to arrive.

As you and your children race through Term 1, I hope you have an amazing time and remember to lend a hand or ask for help if needed. Together we can  finish strong and enjoy the race to the finish line!

SUQLD Holiday Camp for Year 5 & 6

SU LOOP Easter Camp is an outstanding safe and super fun holiday camp for year 5-6 students. It takes place on the first week of the school holidays, Tuesday April 6 - Saturday April 10. I will be attending the camp along with other local school Chaplains, Teachers and blue-card leaders from the South Side of Brisbane.

The camp is up on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, Peregian Springs Glendalough Campsite, [we go up together on buses]. If you would like to find out more about your child attending this camp or other camps offered on the holidays then please email myself suem@chappy.org.au or  https://sucamps.org.au/camps/loop-easter-2021/ it would be awesome to see more RSS students attend, they have loved coming in previous years.

Lost Property and Missing Items

As we approach the end of term, it is a good idea to do a check on your child’s property. Make sure that all hats, jumpers and shoes are labelled clearly. In year 4, we are on the hunt for a missing shoe that has gone home with the wrong owner over a week ago. Both are black runners and look very similar but are not the same.
