Welcome Back

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break and enjoyed the holiday period. It was a different end to Term 1 with the sudden lock-down in the greater Brisbane area forcing schools to close, to most students, three days earlier than anticipated. I would like to once again thank our community for their support around this early closure and for the ongoing commitment and trust you give to our school as we continue to navigate the impact of the COVID pandemic. As of today, the previous lockdown and related restrictions have been lifted in relation to our school and we will revert to the processes and procedures that were in place for the majority of Term 1, prior to the sudden lock-down. Please refer to the separate newsflash sent home yesterday which outlined these expectations and policies. With that unrest now behind us, it was wonderful to see all of the students and families return to school today ready to commence the new term with smiles on their faces.

Term 2

Term 2 commences with a couple of long weekends because of public holidays beginning this weekend. Monday 26 April is a public holiday for ANZAC Day meaning Week 2 will only be 4 days. Week 2 also ends with a long weekend, as Monday 3 May is a public holiday for Labour Day resulting in Week 3 also being a four day week. From Week 4 we will return to regular five day weeks.

Anzac Day Parade

Our whole of school ANZAC parade will be held this Friday morning during our regular parade time. To help recognise the significance of ANZAC Day within Australian society and the importance of this event, we will not be having any other awards or items on this parade. Students and staff are encouraged to wear their relevant medals or badges to help promote and honour the ANZAC spirit at this special assembly. Unfortunately, due to COVID number restrictions, this parade will be a closed event.

NAPLAN

Term 2 is always an important term as our Years 3 and 5 students take part in the National Assessment Program, Literacy And Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing. (These tests were not held last year due to COVID, but are back on the agenda for schools in 2021). The NAPLAN tests are designed to give a point in time snapshot of a child’s progress and to compare this progress with peers within the school, across the State and also across Australia. The tests will be held in Week 4 and all parents will receive an individual student report later in the year. The end of Term 2 will also see formal written school report cards for all students sent home outlining their broader achievements across all subjects for first semester.

Staffing

Mrs Denise Wardle is taking the first five weeks of term off on long service leave. During her absence we welcome Miss Michelle Rossiter to the role of acting Sector Deputy for Years 1 and Prep.

Learner Profile: Attribute focus for the week – Caring – students care about our school’s public image and about how they present themselves, by wearing the correct school uniform with pride. To achieve this goal this term, students must abide by our school uniform policy for the entire term.

Enjoy your long weekend – Lest we forget.

Post Parent-Teacher Interviews

After your Parent-Teacher Interview (PTI), it is important to take time to speak to your child, celebrate strengths, and discuss areas requiring further development.

Before you begin these conversations, take a moment to think about your discussions with the classroom teacher/s and plan at least one or two goals for the next ten weeks. For example…

  • Before my Semester 1 report card, I am going to practice my addition of 2-digit numbers at least twice a week.
  • Before my Semester 1 report card, I am going to make sure I earn my silver Learner Profile Badge by not distracting my classmates in the classroom.
  • Before my Semester 1 report card, I am going to write a paragraph each week to help me learn how to write sentences with capital letters and full stops.
  • Before my Semester 1 report card, I am going to read to mum at least three times a week.

At Rochedale State School, learning goals play a big part in helping our students progress with their learning. Whether they are academic goals or goals to improve their personal development, they play an integral role in our everyday learning.

I encourage you to make time after your parent-teacher interview to set goals with your child/children. When setting your goals, think of your child’s approach to the area for development and set a realistic goal that can be achieved weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

Until next time
Regards
Tom Grimson
Year 3/4 Deputy

Curriculum Connection

Published by Rochedale State School

Dear Parents/caregivers,

Welcome to Term Two. I hope you enjoyed the time with family and friends and didn’t eat too much chocolate.

A key aspect of today’s modern school pedagogy and philosophy is giving students an opportunity to voice their ideas and have input into designing parts of their learning.

In most cases, in the classroom this is guided by the questions the children ask. Teachers respond to these questions by moulding learning experiences to help the children discover the answers to their questions. Teachers may also respond to active conversations or interests the children have raised in class and again provide guided opportunities for the children to find out more information about the focus of their conversations.

Another way we engage ‘student voice’ at Rochedale State School is through the annual Student Led Conferences. These are held each year towards the end of term three. They are an opportunity for the children to use their portfolio to walk you through their year’s learning. The children lead this discussion and are quite animated about engaging their parents in the conversation about their learning.

We build student voice in community through the proactive engagement of the Student Leaders, Music Leaders, House Captains, Student Council and Waste Warriors. These opportunities encourage students to suggest ideas and have input into planning, organising, leading and running small projects around the school.

The Year 6 Exhibition is another example of how we engage students in taking ownership and responsibility for their learning. This project, gives them the opportunity to inquire deeply into concepts through an individually chosen focus area. They then share their new knowledge and understanding with the school community through their exhibition displays.

Under the heading student agency (voice, choice and ownership) students slowly begin to take responsibility for their learning and active participation. This in turn helps them to become proactive positive global citizens.

I hope you have a great week.

SCHOOL BANKING NEWS - IS BACK!

School banking returns this Wednesday April 21, 2021. School Banking Day is Wednesday. Each week you need to hand your bank book to your class teacher for insertion to the grey school banking bag marked with your class name, this is then sent to the office for collection by the school banking team. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through school banking will earn an exciting reward every time they reach 10 deposits. School banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a regular savers contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an annual contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one school banking deposit in the prior year. For more information about contribution payments, visit commbank.com.au/sbinfo. If you would like to know more about school banking, please ask for a 2021 school banking program parent guide from the school office or visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
