From the Principal's Desk

Published by Rochedale State School

Welcome to Week 2 and a shorter than normal week due to yesterday’s public holiday.

All gave some, some gave all - Lest We Forget.

ANZAC Day is a very important part of Australian culture and one of the most solemn days on our calendar. I would like to congratulate all of our students for their excellent participation throughout last Friday’s Anzac Day ceremony. After not being able to hold a live event last year due to COVID, it was wonderful to return to a school ANZAC service in our hall this year to pay tribute to the service men and women of Australia. The behaviour of the students in the audience and the perfect performance by our school leaders, student representatives and our school band ensured that our school’s Anzac ceremony was a memorable event for all who attended. Anzac Day activities have become significant events on our school calendar and are important learning experiences for our students. Thank you to Mrs Maxton for the organisation and running of this ceremony.

Year 6 Camp

This morning we farewelled a very excited bunch of Year 6 students (and their equally excited teachers) as they headed off on a four day camp to Tallebudgera Camp School. Tallebudgera has been operating camps for a very long time – I attended myself, all those years ago - and I am sure our crew will have an extremely fun time. I am looking forward to joining them for the day on Thursday and re-discovering my kayaking and tobogganing skills. Camps are such an exciting and valuable part of our school curriculum and I would like to thank the Year 6 teaching team for organising this event and for giving up their personal time to be with their students on camp. It will be a fantastic week.

Winter uniform

It is great to see that our students are adhering to the ‘School Uniform Policy’, thank you so much for your support. Please note that black shoes are a part of our uniform policy for both the formal and sports uniforms. As we enter into the cooler months, students are expected to wear the school winter uniforms and not just jumpers of any colour. It is also important for all uniforms to have student’s names because when we have cold mornings and warm days it is common for students to shed the warmer layers of clothes (jumpers and track pants) during the day and at play times and forget to collect them again. If these items are labelled it is easier to re-unite clothing with the correct owner. The uniform rule is just as important as every other rule at school and is viewed as such. How can a teacher give a student an ‘A’ comment for behaviour on their report card, or select them for Student of the Month or other accolades, if every day they demonstrate through their uniform that they choose not to follow our school rules. Please help us promote our school’s great image and reputation in the community by supporting our uniform policy.

Maintenance

April/May is certainly one of the best times of the year for weather in Brisbane; cool mornings, warm days and glorious sunsets. Best of all the sunny spells have meant that work has recommenced on our junior playground after many weeks of disruption due to rain. The block terrace work has been completed, some of the artificial grass put in place and wooden platforms built around key trees. The old shade sails and poles have been removed ready for the new structure and the earth works are being completed to install three slippery slides on the far bank. (I have included an updated photo below). Once completed, this area will be a terrific playground for our junior students. If the sunshine holds out, we should hear the sounds of laughter and the noise of children playing in this new area before the end of term.

Learner Profile: Attribute focus for the week – Principled – students respect the rights of others and take their own responsibilities seriously. Students arrive to school on time, return from breaks and get to all classes on time. To achieve this goal, students must be principled for the entire term.

Please note: This Monday, May 3 is a public holiday for Labour Day so we will have another short week next week with school re-commencing on Tuesday May 4. I hope you enjoy our second long weekend of the term.

Kind regards
Keith Graham

Our school does not support any excessive preparation, we acknowledge it is not useful and can lead to unnecessary anxiety. If you have any questions about your child's preparation for NAPLAN, you are encouraged to make a time to speak with their teacher.

The best way parents can help their child prepare for NAPLAN is;

  • make sure they are well rested the night before
  • arrive on time the day of the testing and
  • reassure them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.

If you are considering withdrawing your child from the tests for religious reasons or philosophical objections, we ask that you discuss this with your child’s classroom teacher before Friday May 7.

If your child is eligible for special consideration or test adjustments you will receive a note from Mrs. Jessica Rigby, Head of Diverse Learning and Enrichment this week.

Parents can find out more general information about NAPLAN testing at:

ANZAC DAY PARADE

Congratulations to our students for their excellent respect and participation at Friday’s ANZAC Parade.  It was lovely (as has become the tradition), to have Mr John Winter as our RSL guest speaker.  Mr Carmichael Reynolds laid a wreath on behalf of the P&C, Mrs Sonya Crockett on behalf of the staff and Pacey Krok represented the student body.  Special mention to our student leaders for speaking so eloquently and ensuring the parade was a well-run and moving tribute.

Corrine McMillian Youth Advisory Committee

Corrine McMillian, the State Member for Mansfield has formed her 2021 Youth Advisory Council.  The Youth Advisory Council is made up of local primary and high schools and meets 3-4 times per year.  It aims at helping advise the Palaszczuk Government on youth affairs and the concerns of our young people.

Congratulations to Rudra Tiwari and Matilda Gava for being chosen as our Rochedale State School representatives.   The pair attended their first meeting in mid-March and did an excellent job representing the students of Rochedale State School.

Year 6 Camp

The year six students and teaching team are headed off to camp at Tallebudgera today.  We will enjoy 4 days of exciting activities, while we explore the camp’s theme of the Hero’s Journey.

School camps are a logistical nightmare, require careful risk management and take time away from the more traditional curriculum areas.  However, with all that said there is also a bigger truth in that; ‘not all learning can be contained to the school grounds’.   School camps in general provide children with the opportunity to work with a variety of adults and nurture experiential education.  I am looking forward to watching all our students grow and strengthen their Learning Profile.

Thank you to our Year 6 teaching team + Miss Amy Burford, Chappy Sue and Mr Graeme McKenzie for taking the time out of your own busy lives to ensure that students have access to this wonderful experience.

Have a great weeek
Kellie Maxton
(Deputy Principal Year 5-6)

Curriculum Connection

Published by Rochedale State School

Dear Parents, caregiver and students,

On Sunday, we remembered those who have paid the ultimate price by giving up their lives to ensure our safety and freedom.

Through this small, but memorable action, we not only honoured those in our defence forces who have served and are still serving, but we also invoked the ANZAC spirit. The spirit and legend of the ANZACs is a part of who we are as Australians. It embodies mateship, dedication and having a fair go - three characteristics we can all call on during these testing times.

During the ANZAC parade on Friday, the students listened, sat and stood in respectful silence as we marked this important event in our history and culture.

As an IB world school, it is important to be mindful of significant events that are poignant and reflective of culture. ANZAC Day is one such occasion.  Here at Rochedale State School we strive to be respectful and appreciative of other cultures by being respectful and appreciative of our own.

If you get the chance, and the clouds are kind to us, pop outside about 5.50pm and have a look at the moon. Tonight it will appear rose colour and be 17% larger at it reaches its closest point to the Earth. We should get a good view from here on the east coast.

Have a great week
