From the Principal's Desk

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

From today, Monday 7 March, we’re allowed to conduct assemblies, excursions and school camps.  Parents and visitors are welcome back onsite, we are so excited to be returning to normal and to welcome all parents back onsite.

On Wednesday, 2.30pm we’ll have a short assembly for our Student of the Month awards. Parents are welcome to join us. There is no need to check in at the office if you are attending parade.

On Friday 11 March 9.00am, we have our Student Leader Induction Assembly.  All parents and community members are welcome to join us.

Please remember - anyone who is working or volunteering at a school site must be fully vaccinated for COVID 19.  All volunteers and helpers are required to sign in at the office and show proof of vaccination.

On Thursday, we again faced a situation where the messaging to schools and parents was not clear.  I extend my deep appreciation to the Rochedale staff for their management of a difficult situation. I also thank parents and carers for their patience and quick response to the situation.

I’m grateful for the positive responses from students, parents, and staff to the changes to our teaching and learning over the past week. This positivity is so important in what are extraordinary times.

Principal / Parent Sessions

Now that we can have all parents on school grounds I’d like to offer an opportunity for parents to meet with me on Tuesday 15 March, 2.20pm in RPAC so I can get to know parents and for you to tell me what’s working well and what we can do better.

I’ll run a principal / parent session for working parents on Tuesday 22 March,  6pm in the staffroom.

On Tuesday 29 March 2.00pm in RPAC, I’d like to meet with parents of students with a disability to listen to your feedback.

Teaching and Learning

Over the last week, year levels and specialists have been released to work with the Leadership Team on their planning for Unit of Inquiry 2, UOI2.

During the planning session, teachers worked with the Australian Curriculum, developed marking guides and task sheets for UOI2.

Teachers, including specialists, have also engaged in Data Conversations, examining the 2021 semester 2 A-E achievement of students in their year levels/learning area.

For further information, parents can access the Australian Curriculum website to view the F-10 Curriculum; https://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/

You can access parent information: https://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/parent-information/

Pick up and Drop off

After last week’s newsletter, I had parents contact me to raise concerns about the use of the drop off zone of a morning.  It’s been reported that parents are parking in the 2 minute zone and leaving their cars to take children to ROSHCA or into the school.

Parents are reminded that you cannot park and leave the drop off zone.  If dropping children to ROSHCA please park in the car park and walk your children in.  If you need to take your child into the school grounds please park in the car park.

Your child’s safety is our top priority, failure to follow the road rules puts children, parents and staff in danger.

As our school community continues to grow, parking availability will only get harder to find. Compared to many other schools we are fortunate enough to have parking onsite as well as around the school. Please take the time to know the surrounding area and make a drop off/ pick up plan that is less congested.

The safety of our students, and pedestrians, surrounding Rochedale State School, is of paramount importance and we thank you for your support.

Parents as Learners – Inclusion and Disabilities

Curriculum and reasonable adjustments

Queensland state schools are required to make reasonable adjustments to enable students with disability to attend school, access and participate in the curriculum and in school activities on the same basis as their similar-aged peers.

All Queensland state school students are entitled to access the curriculum and for students in Prep to Year 10, the Australian Curriculum. For some students with disability, reasonable adjustments may include adjustments to the level of curriculum taught, teaching pedagogy and the way assessments are undertaken.

  • An adjustment is a measure or action (or a group of measures or actions) that is personal to a student and may change over time. The adjustment is implemented to ensure that a student with disability is provided with education on the same basis as a student without disability.
  • An adjustment is a response to an identified barrier the student is experiencing to accessing and participating in education. It can be made across the whole school, in the classroom or for individual student need. The adjustment is considered reasonable if it:
    • supports a student with a disability to participate in education on the same basis as other students
    • takes into account the student's learning needs and
    • balances the interests, including the safety of all parties, such as the student with disability, staff members and other students.

Have a great week.

Supporting students with additional needs (SWANs)

We are currently reviewing and streamlining our inclusion agenda across the school. Part of this is how we will be undertaking parent teacher interviews for SWANs this term and the parent signing of adjustment plans of the support provisions that we are providing our SWANs at RSS.

We will be offering extended parent teacher interviews (30 minutes) with the class teacher and Team Teacher for students who have been deemed as requiring substantial or significant supports. The teachers/team teachers will contact you to offer this interview.

SWANs identified as requiring differentiation or supplementary supports, will have the adjustment plan and support provision documentation emailed home for parents to read, sign and return to school.

The team teacher will be available to discuss the adjustment plans with parents for these students too as needed and by appointment. Most parents have or will be contacted this term.

Parents can also contact the class teacher, year level team teacher or myself at any time during the term.

Please continue to let me know if any upcoming specialist or allied health assessments are occurring and if you'd like to discuss support needs for your child/ren.

Inclusion of everybody's business and I look forward to connecting with you all as the semester moves forward.

Regards
Stacey Lloyd

The Learner Profile

At Rochedale State School, we encourage our students to develop and demonstrate the attributes of the Learner Profile. The 10 attributes of the Learner Profile are a whole school focus. They help students acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research and show independence in learning. The attributes are also a great way to help remind children about expectations around communication, attitude and behaviour. The development of the attributes support our endeavour to encourage students to be positive, active members of our Rochedale State School community.

The Learner Profiles are not just for school. They can easily be utilised at home. Being Principled is a great one for home, doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. Of course, the hardest part is trying to remember them all and trying to use them. A good approach is to be reflective and ask the question, ‘What Learner Profile attribute are you demonstrating?’  Or ‘Which Learner Profile attributes have you demonstrated today?’

Have a great week

Harmony Day history holds high significance and preaches the message of cultural unity, with the motto “Everyone Belongs”.

Students can wear orange and spread a sea of unity within our community.

It is the school’s usual practice to take photographs or record images of students and occasionally to publish limited personal information and student materials for the purpose of celebrating student achievement and promoting the school and more broadly celebrating Queensland education. Consent to use your child's name, photograph, voice/video recording or year level is requested at time of enrolment via the "State School Consent Form". If you wish to make changes to consent for your child please request a new State School Consent Form from the school office.

Religious Instruction at Rochedale SS

Religious instruction (RI) will start in Week 7 for students who are participating. This will be dependent on the school returning to normal operating arrangements from Monday 7 March, further information will come out closer to the date.

Students are allocated to attend religious instruction based on information provided by parents/carers on the completed Application for Student Enrolment unless other written instructions have been provided to the school. Note: This information remains operational unless the parent/carer informs the school otherwise, in writing.

Students who are not participating in religious instruction will remain in their classroom and be provided with other instruction by their class teacher. Other instruction relates to part of a subject area already covered in class and may include, but is not restricted to:

·   Personal research and/or assignments
