From the Principal's Desk
Published by Rochedale State SchoolFROM THE PRINCIPAL
It’s been quite a different start to the year. It’s been lovely to welcome parents back onto the school grounds, hopefully this normal will continue.
Last week, we had two assemblies, one for our Student of the Month awards and the other was our Student Leader Induction Assembly. There was a wonderful sense of community with parents and community members joining us.
I loved seeing the Rochedale spirit alive and well with children and staff dancing before and after assembly, one Prep child commented ‘this is awesome’ as he left the gym, I had to agree with him.
Congratulations to our Student Leaders for your induction into your leadership positions:
School Captains – Max B & Mia J
School Vice Captains – Logan P & Basileia F
Music Captains – Sean K & Ava E
Waratah Captains – Luke B & Sarah F
Jacaranda Captains– Ben S & Alena K
Banksia Captains - Lachlan G & Sofia V H
Next week, our parent teacher interviews will begin. This is a great opportunity to get to know your child’s teacher and check in on how your child is going at school.
Principal / Parent Sessions
Now that we can have all parents on school grounds I’d like to offer an opportunity for parents to meet with me on Tuesday 15 March, 2.20pm in RPAC so I can get to know parents and for you to tell me what’s working well and what we can do better.
I’ll run a second principal / parent session for working parents on Tuesday 22 March, 6pm in the staffroom.
Tuesday 29 March 2.00pm in RPAC, I’d like to meet with parents of students with a disability to meet you and to listen to your feedback.
Teaching and Learning
Each year level will have a moderation session with the Leadership Team during week 9 or 10. Our moderation process aligns curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting. Each year level moderation provides consistency of delivery of the curriculum and assessment and A-E achievement.
Moderation is also an opportunity for Teachers and the Leadership to celebrate the success of student learning and to reflect on our teaching practices.
Thank you to the parents and staff who joined us for the P and C AGM on 8 March.
Special thanks to the following parents who have taken on executive roles in the P and C for 2022:
President - Greg Heath
Vice President – Cam Reynolds
Secretary – Alan Burchill
Treasurer – David Champion
General Members - Rob Timms
Petta Traynor
Susannah Boyd

Parents as Learners – Inclusion and Disabilities
What is assistive technology?
Assistive technology includes any hardware, software or system of technical components and processes that enhances the capacity for all students to engage more effectively with the curriculum and their learning environment. This can range from “high tech” options, such as electronic devices, software or power wheelchairs, to “low tech” devices such as a pencil grip, supportive seat or a wrist support to assist with handwriting.
When using technology for learning there are many built-in features included as part of mainstream technologies that make accessing and responding to learning easier for all students, including students with diverse learning needs.
Students and schools can also access and use specialised technologies to support students with disability and other diverse learning needs.
What assistive technologies are used in schools?
Schools use a range of assistive technologies based on individual learner needs. Commonly used assistive technologies include:
- Alternative keyboards, amplification devices and screen magnification or reading software?
- Communication tools
- Speech-to-text or word prediction tools
- Organisational framework applications to support student learning
- Specific curriculum programs and subject specific virtual supports.
Have a great week
