From the Principal's Desk

Published by Rochedale State School

We have many talented students at Rochedale SS, this week I’d like to congratulate the following students:

Luke B, Emily A and Josh A are Metropolitan East cross country champions.  We have 3 regional champions going to the Queensland state titles…..this is the best Rochedale SS has done at these championships.

Max B was selected in the 12 year old boys Queensland AFL team.

Madalyn C and Aryana S have made it into the Metropolitan East Girls Touch Football Team.

Lincoln E competed at the state qualifying event for diving.  He has qualified for the nationals, with the highest qualifying score out of all National Talent Program athletes, aged between 9 and 14.

Congratulations!

Teaching and Learning

School Improvement Agenda for 2022 will continue to focus on improving student outcomes:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Differentiation

Moderation This week teachers from Year 6, Year 1 and Prep will meet with the Leadership Team to moderate term 2 assessment. Our moderation process aligns curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting.  Each year level moderation provides consistency of delivery of the curriculum and assessment and A-E achievement.
The work the children have produced is impressive, teachers and students should be proud of the teaching and learning they have done.

UOI Planning Sessions The current round of planning sessions this week and next, will see year level teams work together on Unit of Inquiry 4 (UOI), term 3 assessment and teaching and learning.

Parents as Learners – Inclusion and Disabilities

Development coordination disorder (DCD) is a developmental disorder that causes problems with movement and coordination.

Children with DCD can find it hard to coordinate their bodies to do everyday tasks, like dressing themselves, writing neatly, running or riding a bike. This can make them seem clumsy or awkward.

Children with DCD are just as smart as other people.  However clumsiness and trouble with everyday physical activities can affect children’s self-esteem, ability to fit in with others and schoolwork.

DCD affects 5-6% of children and is a lifelong condition.

Signs and symptoms of DCD
Children with development coordination disorder (DCD) might have trouble with:

  • small, detailed movements (fine motor skills) – for example, writing, tying shoelaces or using cutlery
  • larger movements (gross motor skills) – for example, kicking, throwing or jumping.

They might also have trouble:

  • learning new movements
  • using movement skills in unfamiliar ways or situations – for example, catching balls of different sizes
  • planning movements, especially as part of a sequence of steps – for example, learning a dance routine.

Other signs of DCD might be:

  • poor balance – for example, tripping and falling a lot
  • awkward or clumsy movements – for example, a child might often bump into things
  • messy writing
  • physical fatigue – for example, a short walk to the local store might take longer and be more tiring for a child with DCD.

Children with DCD might also avoid tasks that need movement or coordination, like dressing themselves.

Treatment for children with DCD

There’s no cure for development coordination disorder (DCD), but therapy can help your child to manage their symptoms. The right therapy for DCD depends on your child’s existing movement skills.

For example, an occupational therapist might be able to show you how to teach new movement skills to your child, by breaking them down into steps. This might include skills like tying shoelaces or handwriting, which will make things easier for your child at home and at school.

Or a physiotherapist might be able to work with your child to improve her gross and/or fine movement skills. This can make it easier for your child to do everyday things like running or getting dressed.

School support for children with DCD

Children with development coordination disorder (DCD) can face challenges at school that can make it difficult to keep up in class or fit in with peers.

A child with DCD might have trouble:

  • writing and typing fast or accurately enough to keep up in written tasks or tests
  • using tools and materials for art, craft or science activities
  • remembering or following complex instructions
  • taking part in PE class
  • speaking clearly, which can make it harder to socialise or fit in with others.

Have a great week

2023 Prep Enrolments are now open!

Enrolments for Prep 2023 are now open for children born between 1 July 2017 and 30 June 2018. Children must be five (5) by 30 June in the year they enrol. Applications for enrolment will only be accepted for students within the school catchment area (or siblings of a current 2022 student). Unfortunately, we won’t be offering any out of catchment places for 2023. For further information, please contact our school Enrolments Officer, Mrs Amanda Ross on PH: 3340 8333 or E: enrolments@rochedalss.eq.edu.au

Did you know? Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance at school is associated, on average, with higher student achievement.

Every day counts in Prep because going to Prep every day …

• will make sure your child gets the most out of their important first year of school
• will make your child’s transition into Year 1 easier
• improves your child’s reading, writing and maths
• builds a positive approach to learning
• strengthens your child’s independence and confidence.

Prep in Queensland

• Prep is the first year of school in Queensland. It is also the first year of the Australian Curriculum.
• Prep is full-time. It is from Monday to Friday – the same time as the other years at school.
• Schools assess and report on Prep students’ achievements.

If you would like further information regarding ‘Every day counts’ you can click on the link: https://education.qld.gov.au/initiatives-and-strategies/initiatives/every-day-counts or make contact with Prep Deputy Principal, Nicola Leslie nlesl2@eq.edu.au

Reading and Writing Centre

The Department of Education Reading and Writing Centre supports schools, teachers and parents/carers to encourage and teach young people to improve their reading and writing skills. They have provided a range of guides, fact sheets and videos on how you can support your child’s reading at home and school.  https://readingwritingcentre.education.qld.gov.au/

Curriculum Connection

Published by Rochedale State School

This year, Rochedale State School participated in the South East Region’s 2022 Readers Cup. The competition is organised by the Children’s Book Council of Australia Queensland Branch and promotes a positive culture around reading for our children.

As part of this competition, our students agreed to read a number of books across Term 2. The team consisted of 5 students. Mrs Ros Cradden was the coach this year, and provided assistance and encouragement to the students while reading their books.  On Tuesday June 7, the Rochedale Reading team attended a regional competition held at Stretton College. Here they participated in discussions, asking and answering questions about the texts, collaboratively as a team.

Well done to Mrs Cradden and the students for proudly representing Rochedale State School.

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY REQUIRED - SNACK SHACK & BTS UNIFORM SHOP

UNIFORM SHOP NEWS: Uniform shop (eq.edu.au)

We welcome Janelle, to the casual role of Uniform Shop Convenor. Janelle will cover the role once Kate has gone on maternity leave next term. We are open for over-the-counter sales every Monday & Wednesday from 8.15am-9.15 & 2.15pm-3.15pm. The Uniform Shop Convenor is only onsite on these days. Emails will be answered during off duty hours but please understand this may not mean immediately. Please note: We are no longer able to deliver Qkr orders direct to the classrooms. All Qkr orders are now delivered to the teacher's pigeonholes for the teacher to collect and then distribute to your child. This will happen on Mondays & Wednesdays. Or if you prefer you can pick up on the day in the afternoon, but please let us know by email so that we can hold on to it for you. Please speak with your teacher in the first instance if you do not receive your order. We appreciate your patience during this adjustment. Every effort is made to ensure the orders are delivered directly to the teacher for distribution to your child. Winter stock has now arrived and is ready for you to order. Any questions or concerns can be sent to uniform@rochedalesspandc.com.au

P&C NEWSP&C (eq.edu.au)

Our next General Meeting - Tuesday July 26, 7pm. All are welcome. We will be saying goodbye to some of our Executives at the end of this year. Why not come along to a meeting, no need to join immediately. There are many benefits of volunteering. Volunteering provides you with a sense of purpose, a sense of community, it increases your social skills and allows you to make many new friends. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to pandc@rochedalss.eq.edu.au

SNACK SHACK NEWS: Tuckshop (eq.edu.au)

Unfortunately, due to staff shortages with the Snack Shack we have had to make the decision to close the service on Mondays (as of June 13) for the rest of term. We would like to thank the current staff and volunteers for all their hard work they have put in over the past few weeks. Unfortunately it has come to a point where it is no longer possible for them to keep the service open 5 days a week. We do not take this decision lightly and we know it will inconvenience some families. Without sufficient staff and volunteers it is not possible to produce the food to the healthy standard and volume that we require. To clarify, the service will remain open from Tuesdays to Fridays for the rest of term. We hope that the service can return to 5-day operation after the mid-year break. This will be contingent on availability of staff and volunteers. Qkr order cut-off is 8.45am for that day's delivery. Orders can be placed at any time during the day or night for the next day's delivery. Here at Rochedale State School Snack Shack, we are looking to support our fabulous staff for sticking with us while still providing us with our daily tuckshop needs. We are looking for a new Convenor as well as new volunteers and casuals, so we can continue and improve our service to the children of our school, but we cannot do this without your help. Mums, Dads, and Grandparents make great volunteers, and your child will love seeing you there! See what we do and how we prepare all the lunches on site. If you can spare some time, even if it is only half an hour in the mornings (when you do school drop off), every little bit helps. Make new friends and have a laugh. We are creating a new volunteer schedule of the times when we will need help. Any concerns or questions you may have please email tuckshop@rochedalesspandc.com.au
