Acknowledgement of Queen Elizabeth II

It was sad news to hear of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. On February 6 this year Her Majesty, The Queen celebrated a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge her years of dedication and service.

All Queenslanders will have an opportunity to express their grief and condolences by sending a message of sympathy via the State of Queensland condolence book, available online at https://www.qld.gov.au/condolences. The messages of support and condolence will be shared with the Royal Family.

Dr Justin Coulson, host of Channel 9 Parental Guidance, is coming to Rochedale SS on Monday 10 October, World Mental Health Day.

Moderation, each year level has met with the Leadership Team over the past week and a half to moderate the term 3 assessment. Our moderation process aligns curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and reporting.  Each year level moderation provides consistency of delivery of the curriculum and assessment and A-E achievement.

Moderation is also a celebration of the learning that has occurred over the term.

Student Led Conferences are being held this week. I know students are excited to share their learning with you.

How can I help my child with their homework?

Some helpful tips to assist in setting homework routines at home.

1. Try to ensure homework is completed at a regular time each day. This isn’t always easy with sport and other commitments. A routine time can eventually turn into autonomous behaviour without prompting.

2. Attend parent-teacher interviews and student-led conferences to familiarise yourself with classroom expectations around homework.

3. Spend some time on the weekend looking at you child’s study space – is it inviting? With your child, discuss what could help make the study space more appealing? A nice lamp, chair or stationery?

4. After your child has started their homework, offer your assistance to see if you can help them sort out a time-management plan to get to the end.

5. Ensure the study-space is away from distractions like TVs and electronic devices.

6. Allow students to complete the homework on their own. Although it’s okay to make suggestions and provide prompts, ensure the children are doing the learning.

7. Praise your child for their efforts. Commend them for their accomplishments and ensure there’s a positive space provided after homework is completed – time on a device, time outside, afternoon tea…

Students are more likely to approach school with a positive attitude when parents take an active interest in their homework. If you have any questions about your child’s homework, please be sure to contact your child’s classroom teacher.

IB News

Being an International Baccalaureate (IB) Parent

Parents are vital to the success of their child’s educational experience. As a parent at a Primary Years Programme (PYP) school, we consider everyone at Rochedale State School (staff, teachers, parents, students) to be part of our community of learners, continuously growing and working together to become more internationally minded. The more familiar parents are with the purpose and structure of the PYP, the better they will be able to support learning at home. In this newsletter edition, I have again, highlighted some strategies that parents can utilise to support their child’s IB education.

  1. Use the vocabulary of the Learner Profile attributes to reinforce at home. You can also use these words as you discuss characters in books your child enjoys reading.  Each term we have a weekly focus on each of the ten (10) attributes.
  2. Encourage your child to ask questions about life and the world around them and to actively search for answers. IB students are prepared to be life-long learners who are not afraid to ask questions. Most problems have been solved because someone who was open-minded was not afraid to ask, “why?” or “what if?”. As a parent, you can be a great role model by encouraging questions.
  3. Have conversations with your child. Questions such as, “what is something interesting you did today?” This type of question can open up dinner table conversations, allowing students the time to reflect on what occurred both inside and outside of the classroom. You can support your child’s reflections by helping them make connections, validating their experiences, and even adding new learning.
  4. Help your child develop their ability to reflect. Reflection is a key element to the learning process and is part of action, an essential element to the PYP curriculum framework. “What makes you say that?” and “what would you do differently next time?” are some types of reflection questions that teachers use to help support students as they are reflecting on their work/actions.
  5. Learn more about the benefits of an IB education by getting involved in the classroom and checking out our school website.

Have a great week

Waste Warrior Challange by Hudson B

The challenge is to plant something in a container that follows Reduce, Reuse and Recycle as the main theme. Any student who completes the task over the holidays can report their achievement to a waste warrior representative, who would record their first name and class in the Waste Warrior window box.

Well, nude food day is a worldwide initiative where we consume healthy foods without packaging for the entire day! This is to encourage people to eat nutritious food without disposable wrapping, benefiting our environment, and the safety of our planet.
