Student Achievement
Congratulations to our Beginner Band for winning the overall award, Platinum, at the Music Fest on Friday. We are so very proud of you! Congratulations to Mrs Robyn Forshaw for her outstanding teaching of the Beginner Band to set them up for success.

Congratulations to Senior Band and Intermediate Band who achieved a Gold Award for their performances.

Student Safety

Concerns have been raised by the  manager of the BP service station, across the road from the school, and from members of the community about student safety.

It’s been reported parents are dropping students off at the service station for them to cross the road by themselves. Last week, there was a near miss with a child narrowly being missed by a passing car.

Other parents are parking illegally at the service station and leaving the car to drop children at the school.

The safety of our students, and pedestrians, surrounding Rochedale State School, is of paramount importance please do the right thing and make sure your children are safe coming to school.

World Teachers’ Day Friday 28 October

On Friday, we celebrate World Teachers’ Day. This is an opportunity to recognise the work our amazing teachers do every day.

Across the year there are days to recognise different staff in the school environment. Rochedale State School’s celebration on Friday was to recognise all school staff for their work to make our school the best it can be for our students. Together they are providing an outstanding education for our students and setting them up for their future.

We would like to thank the P & C for kindly providing a lunch for our staff last Friday in recognition of the work they do to support your children and to promote staff wellbeing. Thank you to Natasha Floyd for organising the catering

“Let us remember: One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.” – Malala Yousafzai

Our teachers and school staff change the lives of our young students every day.

Daniel Morcombe Day

‘Day for Daniel’ is held annually on the last Friday of October, and honours the memory of Daniel Morcombe. It is a “National Day of Action” and an initiative of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, which focuses on educating children and adults about keeping kids safe through child safety and protection initiatives. It aims to help empower our children to Recognise, React and Report if they feel something is not right. The community is asked on this very significant day to “Wear Red, Educate and Donate”. The theme for Day for Daniel 2022, is “Brave Conversations”

This week our student council will be organising ‘Day for Daniel’. On Friday 28 October, all students are encouraged to wear red and bring a gold coin donation. All funds raised will go to the Daniel Morcombe foundation. Thank you Rochedale for getting behind this cause.

IB/PYP News

Published by Rochedale State School

International Baccalaureate (IB) students and teachers work to embody a set of ten characteristics known as the IB Learner Profile – striving to be inquirers, thinkers, communicators, courageous, principled, knowledgeable, balanced, reflective, caring, and open-minded. The IB Learner Profile describes a broad range of human capacities and a commitment to learning and development that goes beyond academic success.

Using children’s literature is a great provocation to talk about these attributes with your children.  We have listed some children’s books connecting to the Learner Profile attributes (CARING AND PRINCIPLED) you may like to read with your children.

CARING
Prep - Year 2

Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Fox, MemWilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge is a little boy who lives beside a nursing home. He has many friends there, but his favourite is Miss Nancy Alison Delacourt Cooper because she has four names just like he does. When Miss Delacourt loses her memory, Wilfrid develops a plan to help her find it. (5-8 yrs.)
Koala Lou by Fox, Mem, 2001Koala Lou decides to enter the Bush Olympics. Her mother has become so busy that she forgets to tell Koala Lou how much she loves her. Koala Lou hopes to win her mother’s love and a medal all at the same time. (5-8 yrs)
Frog and Toad are Friends by Lobel, Arnold, 1970Five tales recount the adventures of two best friends–Frog and Toad. Friends appreciate each other’s strengths and forgive weaknesses. (4-7 yrs.)
Kensuke’s Kingdom by Morpurgo, Michael Scholastic, 1999.When Michael is washed up on an island he struggles to survive on his own. He is about to give up when food appears. He is not alone. This is a wonderful story of survival and about Kensuke, an elderly Japanese man who lives on the island and has survived for many years using traditional Japanese skills and crafts. (Years 5 – 6)

PRINCIPLED
Prep - Year 2

This is Our House
by Michael Rosen, illus. by Bob GrahamGeorge has decided that he is the only one who can play in the big cardboard house, but the other children are determined that everyone shall play in it. A charming and humorous picture book about sharing and cooperation. (4 – 8 years)
Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell, illus. by Helen OxenburyThis Award-winning book has overtones of Animal Farm for littlies. The animals use their initiative and take over the running of the farm from a domineering, lazy and bossy farmer. (6 – 13 years)
Rose Blanche by Ian McEwan, illustrated by Roberto InnocentiThis is an extremely moving portrayal of the horrors of war seen through the eyes of a young German girl who, when she discovers children in a concentration camp in the woods, secretly takes food to them. Innocenti’s illustrations portray much of the greed and desolation of wartime and about the others who did not see what was happening. For older children 9 years up.

Year 3 - 6
When Jessie Came Across the Sea by Amy Hest, illustrated by P J LynchThis beautifully illustrated picture book vividly describes a young girl’s journey from eastern Europe when she migrates to a new life in America at the turn of the nineteenth century. Jessie has left behind her beloved grandmother and is determined to work out a way that they can be together again. (7 -13 yrs.)
Abdullah’s Butterfly by Fraser, Janine Harper Collins, 1996Set in a village in Malaysia this is the story of Abdullah, his love for his grandfather and his family and how he tries to bring extra money into the family by catching beautiful butterflies. Told by a tourist visitor to the village who at first does not understand that Abdullah’s family has very little money, the story is simple enough for seven year old to read but opens up possibilities for discussion about topics such as poverty in developing countries for older children.

Have a great week

SNACK SHACK NEWS: Tuckshop (eq.edu.au)

We are currently looking for a cook. If you or anyone you know is interested in this position, please apply through Seek https://www.seek.com.au/job/58865613

Unfortunately, some of the new menu items will be rearranged to accommodate some recent staffing changes. We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused and thank you for your understanding and your continued support. We are still committed to the new menu, and we will continue it update it over the coming weeks. Here at Rochedale State School Snack Shack, we are very lucky to have a very supportive community and we appreciate how the families have maintained the support. Reminder: Qkr order cut-off is 8.45am for that day's delivery. Orders can be placed at any time during the day or night for the next day's delivery. Mums, Dads, and Grandparents make great volunteers, why not give it a try? Your child will love seeing you there! See what we do and how we prepare all the lunches on site. If you can spare some time, even if it is only half an hour in the mornings (when you do school drop off), every little bit helps. Make new friends and have a laugh. We are always looking for new volunteers. Any concerns or questions you may have please email tuckshop@rochedalesspandc.com.au or tsmanager@rochedalesspandc.com.au

Please feel free to come in and visit us now, as we are back to being open every Monday & Wednesday during term time 8.15am-9.15am & 2.15pm-3.15pm. We have changed our POS system to Square, due to the previous one no longer being fit for purpose. Please be patient as we learn the new system. We are no longer able to deliver Qkr orders direct to the classrooms. All Qkr orders are now delivered to the teacher's pigeonholes for the teacher to collect and then distribute to your child. This will happen on Mondays & Wednesdays. Or if you prefer you can pick up on the day in the afternoon, but please let us know by email so that we can hold on to it for you. Please speak with your teacher in the first instance if you do not receive your order. We appreciate your patience during this adjustment. Every effort is made to ensure the orders are delivered directly to the teacher for distribution to your child, if your order has not arrived by Thursday each week, please email your teacher. Back-to-school bookings will be through SOBS and we will have more info in the coming weeks. Any questions or concerns can be sent to uniform@rochedalesspandc.com.au
