School resumes on Monday 23 January 2023 for all children from Prep to Year 6. All state schools are staffed on the Day 8 Enrolment data collection at the start of the school year. Whether we form straight classes or multi-age classes is dependent on enrolment numbers on Day 8 – 2 February 2023. Parents are reminded that class composition, teacher year level allocations and class placements are all subject to adjustment post Day 8.

For audit purposes, it is vital we have correct enrolment numbers at the commencement of the 2023 school year. If you will be returning later than the school start date, please also indicate your intended date of return and reason such as visiting family overseas. You will be requested to complete an acceptable evidence form,  please email    Jane Jeffrey jjeff157@eq.edu.au

Please note that classes and teachers can change depending on enrolment numbers.
Student Achievement

Congratulations to  Kevin, 3L, who has been competing in the Junior Tennis Development Series tournaments since March.  Kevin has had 6 straight wins in the last 9 tournaments and has been selected as one of the 10 orange ball players to represent Tennis Brisbane at the Bolt To Brisbane competition on 27 November.

2023 Year 6 Student Leadership

Last week, we had campaign week with school captain nominees raising their profile amongst their peers. It was lovely to see so many posters and vote cards.

This week, school captain nominees present a short talk to Year 4 and Year 5 students in RPAC. A ballot is held for students and staff to select the 2023 school captains.

Best wishes to each of the school captain nominees.

EQ’s policy on received gifts and benefits

As we move into the Christmas period I know that many parents wish to give teacher’s a gift to thank them for the year.  I wanted to draw your attention to the EQ’s policy on receiving gifts and benefits.  In particular, employees must refuse any offer of cash, or any items which are readily converted into cash — such as a lottery ticket or ‘scratchie’ or shares.

All gifts that have a value of more than $150 must be recorded in DETE’s gift registry. This includes a gift where a number of parents contribute to buy a gift.

Report Card preparation – Getting ready for reports via email

Report Cards will be emailed home on Tuesday 6 December, please note the change of date. Emailing report cards has a significant impact on the environmental footprint of the school by reducing printing and paper usage.

Report cards will not be distributed prior to 6 December.

To ensure that parents/carers receive their child’s report card we need to update family contact details. If your contact details have changed please contact the school office. Where students reside in two homes, it is important that all family members have the correct information listed with the school, so both parents/carers will receive a report card via email.

To ensure you receive your child’s report card please add the following email to your safe senders list so the report card email isn’t sent to the Junk folder.

Remembrance Day

On Friday, November 11, we will be commemorating Remembrance Day. At 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918 silence filled the air. After four years of continuous war, there was a cease fire. A peace settlement was secured by the battling armies and World War I was finally over. While on this day we commemorate the end of the First World War, we also remember those men and women who have fought in other conflicts. It is a good time to pause, reflect and consider the work and sacrifice that our service men and women continue to give to ensure our safety and freedom.

The first world war was also the first time that the young nation of Australia sent soldiers to war. It was during these conflicts that the tradition of the ANZAC spirit was born.

After the first world war, society had moved forward with a greater focus and effort on equality. The end of the first world war also saw the rise of international mindedness, with a focus upon dialogue and nations working collaboratively to solve problems. This brought about the beginning of the United Nations.

To foster global citizenship, it is important for us to know about our own national history and traditions, as well as the history of other countries and global events. It is through knowledge and understanding that we are able to develop the attitudes of tolerance and acceptance and build everlasting peace and well-being for all.

In week 6, to help commemorate this day, the Student Council will be selling poppies and badges to students out the front of the administration building. This will be on Tuesday 8, Wednesday 9, Thursday 10 and Friday 11 from 8am. Student council will also be selling the badges and poppies after the lunch play bell on those same days. Thank you on behalf of the Student Council for your support.

YEAR 4 CAMP

The year four students and teaching team returned triumphantly from the Luther Heights Camp in beautiful Coolum week 4.  They enjoyed 2 days of exciting activities and got to experience being away from home (many for the first time), putting into practise their risk taking and independence skills.

School camps require careful organisation and management and take time away from the more traditional curriculum areas.  However, with all that said there is also a bigger truth in that; ‘not all learning can be contained to the school grounds’.   Our school’s camp program provides children with the opportunity to work with a variety of adults and nurture experiential education.   Thank you to our Year 4 teaching team plus Mr Jeffery and Mrs Cradden for taking the time out of your own busy lives to ensure that students had access to this wonderful experience.

HOW STUDENTS CAN FINISH THE YEAR ON A HIGH NOTE

Before we know it, we will be enjoying the Christmas break and lazing around a pool, but until then there is still much to do at school and the end of semester is a great time to reflect on what students will take away from their school year?

As adults it is important to help children finish the school year strong and leverage all the ‘lessons’ learnt along the way.   Below are some thoughts on assisting students to continue to put forth their best effort until that last school bell rings.

Work until the final buzzer

We want to raise responsible learners who don’t quit and are able to work hard despite distractions.  Goals are a great way to keep students motivated and on-task towards the end of a school year. Help your children select one or two small goals to accomplish before the end of the school year.  The goals should be challenging but reachable. Some ideas include things like reading every night or finally mastering the 12 times tables. Work with your son or daughter to determine steps to take to work towards their goals and encourage practice at home.

Do the little things right

It can be disastrous to accept a casual mindset at this time of year.  Routines, behaviour expectations and high standards matter all the time.  Support the school and your child’s teacher by reinforcing these daily.

What have the tough times taught us?

No one has smooth sailing all of the time.  Help children see how persisting with difficult tasks or situations this year has helped them grow and become stronger/braver/better.

Celebrate Success

Help your child identify their personal and academic successes.  Success begets success, and by actively reflecting on the year’s highlights, it further increases the likelihood of more accomplishments to come.  Over 12 months, children will find so many areas in which they can be proud.

Enjoy the Events

While it can be crazy busy, keep children ‘present’ and encourage them to enjoy all the special events and ‘lasts’ for the year.

Be Future Focussed

Have some conversations at home about what your child will do the same next year (what worked?) and what will be different (what didn’t?).

Have a great week

IB News (Learner Profile books CONTINUED)

International Baccalaureate (IB) students and teachers work to embody a set of ten characteristics known as the IB Learner Profile – striving to be inquirers, thinkers, communicators, courageous, principled, knowledgeable, balanced, reflective, caring, and open-minded. The IB Learner Profile describes a broad range of human capacities and a commitment to learning and development that goes beyond academic success.

Using children’s literature is a great provocation to talk about these attributes with your children.  We have listed some children’s books connecting to the Learner Profile attributes (KNOWLEDGEABLE AND COMMUNICATORS) you may like to read with your children.

KNOWLEDGEABLE
Prep – Year 2

Officer Buckle and Gloria Rathman, Peggy 1995Officer Buckle knows all about safety, but when he tries to impart that knowledge to the students in school, he bores them to sleep! No matter because his dog Gloria knows all this stuff too and she knows exactly how to make the children sit up and take note! (7-9.yrs.)
Tops and Bottoms by Stevens, Janet, 1995Hare and Bear negotiate over the kitchen garden. The deal is one takes the tops and the other takes the bottoms of the veggies. Hare knows his vegetables so he always knows which way to call it in order to stay on top of his game! (7-9 yrs)

Year 3-6

One Grain of Rice by Demi, 1997The knowledge of arithmetic enables the young girl to outwit the greedy raja who refuses to share his stored rice with his starving people. (8-10yrs)

My Great-Aunt Arizona by Houston, Gloria, 1992Knowledge of the world through travel was a dream that Arizona could never afford, but she gained knowledge the next best way – through her books. (7-11yrs)

Starry Messenger by Sis, Peter Farrar, Strauss, Giroux, 1996.Describes the life and work of the courageous man who changed the way people saw the galaxy, by offering objective evidence that the earth was not the fixed centre of the universe. 2

COMMUNICATOR

Prep – Year 2

Counting on Frank by Rod ClementThis is the story of a boy who is a true enthusiast about mathematics and is always estimating, calculating and working things out. How many Franks would fill up the bedroom? (Frank is a dog). Striking illustrations add to the fun. (5 – 10 years)I will not ever never eat a tomato by Lauren ChildCharlie’s little sister Lola is a fussy eater. However, Charlie works out an ingenious way of encouraging her to eat, even the foods she doesn’t like. Charlie tells Lola that these are not peas, “these are green drops from Greenland.”Diary of a Worm by Cronin, Doreen, 2004This book is a simple and comical journal from a young worm’s perspective. (6-9yrs)

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that type by Cronin, Doreen, 2003The farm animals communicate to Farmer Brown by typing and writing their demands. (7-9 yrs.)

Diary of a Wombat by French, Jackie, 2003Few words are used to describe the antics of a wombat’s everyday life. (5-7yrs)

Year 3-6

The Colour of Home by Mary Hoffman, illus. by Karin LittlewoodHassan is miserable at school in England where everything is grey, and where he can’t talk to anyone since he doesn’t speak English. When he paints a picture of his far away home, he remembers the terrible time when the soldiers came. However, the next day he talks to an interpreter and paints another picture in bright colours for his mother of their happier times, in the country which used to be their home.

Many thanks

Swimming Carnivals Term 4

Published by Rochedale State School

The senior swimming carnival this term has been altered from previous year's program.

Last year’s senior swimming carnival was such a popular event with many parents and friends attending, it was deemed a safety concern for all who attended.

The grandstand was over capacity and the surrounding available space was very limited to spectate and to officiate the swimming carnival.

So, in light of pool site capacity and layout from last year it is anticipated that the senior carnival will be split into 2 evenst to alleviate the congestion in the pool complex.

The year levels will be split into :

Carnival 1

FRIDAY November 25 - 11 yrs (date of birth 2011) & 12 yrs (date of birth 2010)

Carnival 2

THURSDAY December 1 - 9 yrs (date of birth 2013) & 10 yrs (date of birth 2012)

Each carnival will commence at 9:00am and finish at 10:50am – 2 hour duration.

The points tally from both carnivals will determine the house champions for 2022.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

  • all students will be encouraged to participate in the 25m or 50m events.
  • all swimmers will score points for their house regardless of place.
  • there will be only (6) students swimming the premier 50 metres events: the fastest 6 students (based on time) across all age groups in all four strokes will be allowed to swim in the 50m and placement of first, second or third will go towards points for the age championship.
  • all 25m events will only contribute to the house points and not to the age championship.
  • NB – those students who are not named in the Premier  50m events will swim the 25m events.
  • All students are to participate in the carnival and must bring cap / goggles (optional) / towel / swim wear / water bottle and sunscreen.  I would like every student to participate and have a “go” at all the events to try and score points for their house.
  • any child wishing to swim, must participate in the correct carnival based on their year of birth
  • students can compete without a swim shirt (rashee)
  • It is anticipated that those students who are named the fastest in their age group across the strokes will be placed on the doors of RPAC in week 7.

Parents if you have personal best times of your child’s performances (50m) could you email me direct on cbrow23@eq.edu.au or send in a note ASAP. For those motivated students, parents if you could please assist me and if you could time your child in a 50m pool, it would free up some time in PE.

From the senior 2022 swimming carnivals our school swim team will be determined and these students (who have met the qualifying times) will have the opportunity to participate at the Mt Gravatt District Swimming Trials on February 9, 2023.

2022 JUNIOR SWIMMING CARNIVALS

(Year 1 / Year 2 / Year 3)

Parents and friends are encouraged to come along and enjoy the carnivals to observe how much the students have developed their swimming skills.

The emphasis of the junior swimming sessions is based on fun and participation while allowing for some competitiveness.

The concept of having 3 separate sessions is to reduce the amount of time/ and sun exposure to our children.

Please ensure your child has swim wear / towel / goggles (if needed) and sunscreen for their swimming day.

This term the carnivals will be in 3 separate carnivals whereby each year level will have their own carnival.  Each carnival will be held in the first session, there will be swimming races: 25m with and without a board also a short course (10m) with or without a board.

Year 1’s swimming session    -     Monday November 28 -  9.15am to 10.30   - week 9

Year 2’s swimming session    -     Tuesday November 29 - 9.15am to 10.30   -  week 9

Year 3’s swimming session    -     Wednesday November 30 - 9.15am to 10.30  - week 9
