Student Leadership Celebration and Experience 6 Program

Rochedale year 6 School Leaders; Basileia F, Alena K, Max B, Lachlan G, Mia J, Ava E, Sofia V H, Sean K,  Luke B, Logan P,  Sarah F and Ben S have experienced highlights, and challenges, during their leadership journey this year.

On Wednesday, our leaders will attend Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre (MBEEC) to engage in a leadership program to assist them with continuing to excel. The Leadership Program has been organised because their leadership course at the beginning of the year was cancelled due to storms and wasn’t rescheduled.

Our leaders will engage in activities such as:

  • Knowing yourself and your team to ensure an optimal environment when working on initiatives
  • Presentation skills reflections on clear communication when delivering messages
  • Appreciation of a continuous journey and ability to continue to reflect on highlights and challenges

2023 Year 6 Student Leadership

This week, we’ll hold our speeches to vote in our Sports and Music Captains.

All our new leaders will be officially announced and introduced to the school community Thursday 8 December.

Student Safety

If your child/ren walk or ride to school, please remind them to follow the road rules and to engage in safe behaviour.

Last week, we received a phone call from a concerned parent about bike riding behaviour before school. The parent saw three boys on their bikes ignoring the traffic controller at the roundabout near the fruit shop.  The students were cutting through traffic and being rude to the traffic controller when they tried to redirect them. One boy was almost hit when a car didn't see him in the second lane.

2023 Book Pack Drop off

Parents and carers are welcome to drop off 2023 Book Packs on Thursday 19 January between 1pm and 3pm.  Classrooms will be open for you to drop off book packs, Teacher Aides will be available to assist parents in locating classrooms.

2023

School resumes on Monday 23 January 2023 for all children from Prep to Year 6. All state schools are staffed on the Day 8 Enrolment data collection at the start of the school year. Whether we form straight classes or multi-age classes is dependent on enrolment numbers on Day 8 – 2 February 2023. Parents are reminded that class composition, teacher year level allocations and class placements are all subject to adjustment post Day 8.

For audit purposes, it is vital we have correct enrolment numbers at the commencement of the 2023 school year. If you will be returning later than the school start date, please also indicate your intended date of return and reason such as visiting family overseas. You will be requested to complete an acceptable evidence form, please email Jane Jeffrey jjeff157@eq.edu.au

Please note that classes and teachers can change depending on enrolment numbers.

EQ’s policy on received gifts and benefits

As we move into the Christmas period I know that many parents wish to give teacher’s a gift to thank them for the year.  I wanted to draw your attention to the EQ’s policy on receiving gifts and benefits.  In particular, employees must refuse any offer of cash, or any items which are readily converted into cash — such as a lottery ticket or ‘scratchie’ or shares.

All gifts that have a value of more than $150 must be recorded in DETE’s gift registry. This includes a gift where a number of parents contribute to buy a gift.

Thank you to our Christian Religious Instruction Volunteers

I wish to acknowledge and give my sincere thanks to Sonia Kenny for organising our Christian Religious instruction program and the many volunteers who visit our school.

Have a  great week.

IB News

Published by Rochedale State School

International Baccalaureate (IB) students and teachers work to embody a set of ten characteristics known as the IB Learner Profile – striving to be inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk taker, principled, knowledgeable, balanced, reflective, caring, and open-minded. The IB Learner Profile describes a broad range of human capacities and a commitment to learning and development that goes beyond academic success.

Using children’s literature is a great provocation to talk about these attributes with your children.  We have listed some children’s books connecting to the Learner Profile attributes (RISK TAKER AND OPEN - MINDED) you may like to read with your children.

RISK TAKER

Prep - Year 2

A Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech, illus. by Harry Bliss
An amusing story about a school where the principal is so enthusiastic about his school and the way the students love to learn that he decides to have lessons on Saturday and Sunday too. It is Tilly who summons up the courage to tell the Principal that children must do other things as well. This strong message is very amusingly presented through a witty text and amusing illustrations.  inquirers, risk takers, balanced

This is Our House by Michael Rosen illus. by Bob Graham
George has decided that he is the only one who can play in the big cardboard house, but the other children are determined that everyone shall play in it. A charming and humorous picture book about sharing and cooperation. (4 – 8 years)  principled, risk-takers

Sheila Rae, the Brave by Henkes, Kevin, 1987
When brave Sheila Rae, who usually looks out for her sister Louise, becomes lost and scared one day, Louise comes to the rescue. (4-8yrs.)

Year 3 - 6

Roller Coaster by Marla Frazee
This exhilarating amusement park visit begins with a line of prospective riders, eagerly awaiting their turn . . . with at least one person who has never done this before. Zooming, swerving, dipping, and diving, this delightful story featuring a breathtaking ride and a hilarious range of reactions, will help readers lose their roller coaster anxiety. Marla Frazee’s witty narrative and slyly building of tension delivers an experience unlike any other and will have readers begging to take another ride.

OPEN-MINDED

Prep – Year 2

Dr. Xargle’s Book of Earthlets by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross
A hilarious look at human babies or “earthlets” from the point of view of an alien teaching his class of alien children. Truly a very different perspective that will ensure that babies will never look quite the same again.

Greetings from Sandy Beach by Graham, Bob
Is able to bring into a simple picture book about a family trip to the beach wonderful observations about family life, the difference between the city and the country and also some of our preconceived ideas concerning people and the way they look.

Rose Meets Mr. Wintergarten by Graham, Bob
Rose is a little frightened of fierce old Mr. Wintergarten but she overcomes her fears and her delightful spontaneity and the fairy cakes baked by her mother have a surprising effect on the grumpy old man.risk takers, open-minded, principled

How to Hide a Lion by Helen Stephens
How does a very small girl hide a very large lion? It's not easy, but Iris must do her best, because moms and dads can be funny about having a lion in the house. Luckily, there are lots of good places to hide a lion--behind the shower curtain, in your bed, and even up a tree. But can Iris hide her lion forever? With Helen Stephens's timeless art and elegant text, readers will fall in love with Iris and her lion.

Year 3 - 6

Zen Shorts by Muth, Jon J., 2005
Three classic Zen stories are told in a frame story of three children who meet a strange and wonderful bear. (7-10 yrs.)

Have a great week
