From the Principal's Desk

Published by Rochedale State School

At Rochedale State School, we teach and assess the Australian Curriculum. We use the Department of Education’s P-12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework to inform our practice and decision making.

The Department’s P-12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework stipulates the minimum requirements for providing the curriculum in Prep – Year 6. Our school has created an assessment and reporting plan to align with these requirements (see the link below). The plan shows when learning areas are being assessed and reported on across the school year. All students engage in all learning areas but may not be assessed and reported on in each reporting cycle.

At the beginning of each Unit Of Inquiry (UOI), the UOI  Parent Overviews are emailed to parents and carers. Below is the link to where they are on our school website. Please take the time to reread the overview for your child’s class so when you read their report card, you can see the curriculum they engaged with.

Be Brave: National Reconciliation Week – May 27 – June 3

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

This year’s theme is “Be Brave. Make Change.” and is a challenge for each of us to work together towards a more peaceful future for the benefit of all Australians.

This year Australian’s are asked to make a change beginning with brave actions in our everyday lives where we live, work, play, socialise and learn. To find out more about National Reconciliation Week go to https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au/about-nrw/

Parents as Learners – Inclusion and Disabilities

Education Queensland has a new Every student with disability succeeding 2021–2025 plan (PDF, 15.1MB), the plan aims to support the success and wellbeing of every student with disability through each stage of learning in an inclusive education system.

It supports the department’s commitment to give all children a great start, ensuring every student succeeds,

High Five, Bystander Five and the Learner Profile

When our children come home and report conflict they have experienced at school, we can sometimes be left feeling helpless - How can I help? How can I fix this? Should I intervene?
Should I contact the school?
While some circumstances require follow up communication with the school, in most cases, the best solution is often a proactive one - teaching our children how to communicate confidently with others to ensure they feel safe, supported, and know what to do when conflict arises.

From Prep at Rochedale State School, students learn, the “High Five” and “Bystander Five” and revisit these simple, though powerful, steps each year.

“High Five”

  1. Ignore - this strategy alone can be enough to avoid a situation from building
  2. Talk Friendly – ask in a friendly tone “Please stop, I don’t like it when...”
  3. Talk Firmly - if the conflict continues, say “Stop it - I really don’t like it when..” in a firm voice
  4. Walk Away - leave the situation by moving away from the area
  5. Report - if the person continues, find an adult and seek help to resolve the conflict in a timely manner.

 “Bystander Five”

1.         Stay calm
2.         Keep yourself safe
3.         Talk firmly
4.         Get help
5.         Befriend the victim

Learner Profile Attributes

When you are discussing playground interactions with your child, you can also use the IB Learner Profile attribute language to talk about ways that these can be or are demonstrated in the playground.  How can students demonstrate being caring, a communicator, principled, open-minded or reflective in the playground?  How can they encourage their friends to display these attributes as well?

In discussions at home, using familiar language (Learner Profile) and the tools taught at school (High Five, Bystander Five) will reinforce concepts and assist students to develop and strengthen their social interactions and conflict resolution skills.

Chinese Cultural Performance

Published by Rochedale State School

Join us to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Jie (‘Start-of the-Fifth-Solar-Month Festival’), is a traditional festival which occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month on the Chinese lunar calendar. Dragon boat racing has a rich history of ancient ceremonial traditions. During this festive season, the traditional food shared is ZongZi - rice and variety of fillings wrapped in leaves of bamboo and reed forming a pyramid shape. Another festival activity is to stand an egg on its end, or egg balancing, at noon on the day. It is said that the gravitational and electromagnetic forces on this day makes it much easier for eggs to stand upright. As it is the starting of a warmer season when insects become more active, colourful pouches filled with spices and herbs are worn to repel insects and ward off disease and promote good health. In 2022, the Dragon Boat Festival falls on June 3.

Chinese Lion Dance for Thursday June 2 at 8:10am. We will be holding this event outdoors, weather permitting. It will be colourful, loud, and by holding it outdoors, everyone is welcome to leave the Green Zone and join the celebration. There will be an area marked off for the performance stage, students to sit and parents and teachers to stand.

Venue: Grassy area between Admin Office and the Gym
Date: June 2
Time: 8:10am

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY REQUIRED - SNACK SHACK & UNIFORM SHOP

UNIFORM SHOP NEWS: Uniform shop (eq.edu.au)

URGENTLY NEEDED! Our convenor, Kate, will shortly be going on maternity leave and we will need to have someone come in to learn the ropes to cover while Kate is away. This is a paid contract to cover maternity leave for up to 12 months, 2 days a week, 8am-4pm. Email office@rochedalesspandc.com.au to register your expression of interest. We are open for over-the-counter sales every Monday & Wednesday from 8.15am-9.15 & 2.15pm-3.15pm. The Uniform Shop Convenor, Kate, is only onsite on these days. Emails will be answered during off duty hours but please understand this may not mean immediately. Please note: We are no longer able to deliver Qkr orders direct to the classrooms. All Qkr orders are now delivered to the teacher's pigeonholes for the teacher to collect and then distribute to your child. This will happen on Mondays & Wednesdays. Or if you prefer you can pick up on the day in the afternoon, but please let us know by email so that we can hold on to it for you. Please speak with your teacher in the first instance if you do not receive your order. We appreciate your patience during this adjustment. Every effort is made to ensure the orders are delivered directly to the teacher for distribution to your child. Winter stock has now arrived and is ready for you to order. Any questions or concerns can be sent to uniform@rochedalesspandc.com.au

P&C NEWSP&C (eq.edu.au)

Our next General Meeting - Tuesday July 26, 7pm. All are welcome. We will be saying goodbye to some of our Executives at the end of this year. Why not come along to a meeting, no need to join immediately. There are many benefits of volunteering. Volunteering provides you with a sense of purpose, a sense of community, it increases your social skills and allows you to make many new friends. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to pandc@rochedalss.eq.edu.au

SNACK SHACK NEWS: Tuckshop (eq.edu.au)

New menu starts this week! Thank you to our new volunteers. We still need more help if we are to avoid closing again. Qkr order cut-off is 8.45am for that day's delivery. Orders can be placed at any time during the day or night for the next day's delivery. Here at Rochedale State School Snack Shack, we are looking to support our fabulous staff for sticking with us while still providing us with our daily tuckshop needs. We are looking for a new Convenor as well as new volunteers and casuals, so we can continue and improve our service to the children of our school, but we cannot do this without your help. Mums, Dads, and Grandparents make great volunteers, and your child will love seeing you there! See what we do and how we prepare all the lunches on site. If you can spare some time, even if it is only half an hour in the mornings (when you do school drop off), every little bit helps. Make new friends and have a laugh. We are creating a new volunteer schedule of the times when we will need help. Any concerns or questions you may have please email tuckshop@rochedalesspandc.com.au

Are you available to help during any of the times listed below?

Volunteering can be weekly, fortnightly, or Monthly. If you are available for any of these times, please email us.
