The focus within primary school education is the on the development of the whole child, socially, emotionally, physically, intellectually and culturally. The International Baccalaureate – Primary Years Program (IB-PYP), facilitates a framework to support this development.

The IB-PYP is a part of an international education organisation, educating children from 3–18 years old in over 100 countries around the world. The programs facilitated by the IB are child centered, concept focused and utilise an inquiry approach to learning and teaching. The IB educational philosophy and practices are driven by the belief that children construct conceptual understandings by building upon what they already know. In addition to the Primary Years Program (PYP), the International Baccalaureate offers a Middle Years Program (MYP) and a Diploma Program for senior students.

Learning in an IB-PYP school is focused upon each child developing a deep enduring understanding of each of the 7 key concepts:

  1. Form
  2. Function
  3. Causation
  4. Change
  5. Connection
  6. Responsibility and
  7. Perspective.

Learning is facilitated through a comprehensive inquiry based transdisciplinary Program of Inquiry. It is through this program that Rochedale State School delivers the mandated Australian National Curriculum.

Learning at Rochedale State School is active, challenging, significant and relevant to the children’s needs and desire to learn about themselves, Australia and the world. Learning focuses upon the children developing key skills in the following areas: communication, research, social, self-management and thinking.

Through active promotion of the Learner profile, children are encouraged to demonstrate to be:

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Principled
  • Open-minded
  • Caring
  • Risk-takers
  • Balanced and Reflective.

At Rochedale State School children are engaged as partners in the learning and teaching process. A process that aims to actively engage through higher order thinking skills, whilst ensuring that all key elements of each curriculum area is expertly covered.
